Dwell and DWR Live/Work Contest

Last month we entered a furniture design – a bench / low side table called the Ryles – in the Live/Work Design Contest sponsored by Dwell magazine and Design Within Reach. Out of nearly 600 entries, the Ryles was chosen as a top 10 finalist! Please take a moment to look and vote here - http://new.dwell.com/contests/live-work-design-contest/submissions/ryles

The winner – to be announced at the Dwell on Design conference in Los Angeles June 22-24 – will be given the opportunity to have their design manufactured and sold by Design Within Reach (DWR).

Vintage Pendant Lamp

I previously showed off a vintage Sunbeam AT-A toaster from the mid to late 1960′s that my wife and I found in a forgotten storage building of her parents that had not been opened for nearly 30 years.  We also found this great three pendant hanging lamp.

My wife grew up in an awesome atomic ranch home built in the late 1950′s.  I don’t think her parents ever had a real appreciation for the style – it was simply the right size for the right price in the right neighborhood when they bought it.  Over the years, they changed nearly all of the original finishes and fixtures.  This unique ceramic pendant lamp came out of the breakfast nook.  The blue globe had been broken in storage, but I was able to find all of the pieces and glue them back in.  After some paint, polishing and new wire to replace the yellowed original wiring, it looks nearly as good as new.  We have now given it a new home hanging in a sitting area adjacent to our kitchen.

Modern Shed Plans

Are you looking for a unique, modern shed? If you have been searching, you have probably seen that there are a few great modern shed kits available out there, but most are very high-end and designed more with the thought of building them out as studios, pool cabanas or even guest houses. That’s great, but what if all you need is a shed? Have you gone to your local big-box home improvement store looking for a plan or kit? Unless your taste lean toward bland, we doubt they have had what you’re looking for. Our Shed X-1 plan could be the answer. With our detailed plans and optional materials list, a skilled do-it-yourselfer or handyman can build a shed that expresses your modern style or compliments your mid-century modern home. A combination of conventional plan views and 3-dimensional views are used to help explain construction.

Scantling from Marset

The Scantling lamps from Marset, by designer Mathias Hahn, are beautiful combinations of simple wood and steel pieces.  Three types, a floor lamp, a desk lamp and a sconce, are available.modern lampsmodern light

A combination of basic geometric shapes and the use of wood together with metal give this range of lamps a homely appearance, at the same time as a clearly defined personality. All of the movements of the fully rotating shade use arms and hinges, and its technical precision means that springs or counterweights are not necessary in order to maintain the selected position. Scantling is a term used to define the size to which a piece of wood or stone is measured and cut, derived from the name of an old unit of measurement. The interplay of the different elements used in its design gives this lamp an archetypal, almost graphic appearance.

Mountain Diva by Jordi Milà

I came across these great pieces by designer Jordi Milà.  They seem very mid-century modern inspired.  The high / low levels of the table give the feel of the classic MCM end tables and nightstands.  The bench, which is available as either a two or a four seat version, reminds me of a morphed Eames shell chair on an eiffel base.modern furniture MCM

Jordi Milà has been working in the world of design for more than 15 years, and he has collaborated in many projects around the globe through his company EDDADESIGN. The collection we present here is the result of his will to design something with full creative freedom, something truly personal and not conditioned by the needs of others. This is why the brand carries his own name, and he hopes that the thrill and excitement of designing these pieces will reflect on the final results and, hopefully, make them thrilling and exciting for you too.

Update a Fireplace

We’ve been in our current home for nearly 10 years now.  It is an early 80′s subdivision builder take on modern – sort of a Brady Bunch house, but not as cool.  The exterior has the modern lines and style of the time, but the interior was finished out just as the more traditional houses surrounding us were.  We loved the street and the floor plan so we overlooked it’s shortcomings with the thought we would eventually remodel.

We quickly made it our own as much as we could with simple things like paint, door hardware and lights, but as is typically the case, it took us longer than expected to get around to the major changes.  Finally, last year, we dove in – to the first floor at least.  We stripped all of the trim and most cabinetry, moved a couple of walls and created some larger openings.  I hit myself in the head HARD with a hammer in the process of demolition – something I would have previously thought not possible!  I spent the rest of the day working with a paper towel stuffed in my ear to hold back the bleeding.  One of my favorite parts of what we accomplished is our newly re-designed fireplace.

And the finished product:

modern fireplacemodern fireplaceWe are still trying to accessorize properly.  The Shag print my wife gave me for my birthday fits nicely and the vintage Eames shell chair I previously posted about now sits in place of the orange Ikea chair in these photos.  We have always had somewhat modern taste, but much more so now than when we were first married, so we have many previously purchased pieces and gifts from family that just don’t fit.  Some of it is getting weeded out over time, but some things, you just feel obligated to keep, so I don’t think we’ll ever be magazine photo shoot material, but that’s OK – we’re happy with it.

Bar Carts and Cabinets

When there is room to do it and interest in it from the clients, I love designing homes with built-in bars in the family or game rooms.  We have one in our home, and have found it becomes a great multi-purpose space – additional seating when entertaining, a casual dinner counter, a great place for homework or, it’s original purpose, a spot to relax and have a drink at the end of the day!

If you don’t have a built-in bar or room to add one, bar cabinets and carts can be a fun piece of furniture to shop for.  There is so much variety and, if you choose to go with a cart, it can be a very versatile piece for indoors or out.  Here are a few of our favorite solutions – some aren’t specifically intended as bar storage, but we think they could make a great choice:
